Hidden in the roof of St Thomas's Church is a 300 - year old herb garret which houses Britain's only surviving 19th-century operating theatre, complete with wooden operating table and observation stands, from which spectators witnessed surgery performed without anaesthesia or antiseptics. The museum's collection includes displays of surgical apparatus, pathological specimens, and the history of herbal physic.
