Afterwards, we take the backroads deep into the Cotswolds - a beautiful area of rolling hills, wooded valleys and unspoilt villages of honey coloured stone and thatched cottages. Visit Stow on the Wold with its quaint market square, medieval stocks and antique shops and the charming villages of the Slaughters. Traditional rural England at its very best. And finally to Oxford, England's oldest university city dating back to the 11th century.
We have time to explore Burford. The distinctive main street in Burford is long and steep. There is a jumbled juxtaposition of houses and shops. Grey gabled buildings with lichen encrusted roofs, hotels, shops, tea rooms and inns. Crooked roof lines, leaning walls, no two buildings the same.
Our circular tour of the Cotswolds district also includes a visit to Bourton-on-the-Water, often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ because the River Windrush runs right through the centre. The combination of this clear sparkling water and the attractive low bridges crossing it create a charming scene.
Included in the price is a delicious cream tea in historic surroundings (a traditional fruit scone split with strawberry jam and clotted cream served with a pot of tea) . Not to be missed!
