» OXFORD,THE COTSWOLDS, SHAKESPEARE’S STRATFORD
& WARWICK CASTLE - Full Day Coach Tour

Highlights: Walking tour of Oxford * Scenic Cotswold Drive * Stratford upon Avon with entry to Shakespeare's Birthplace * Warwick Castle

We begin our day travelling across the Chiltern Hills to Oxford, the 'City of Dreaming Spires', whose hushed courtyards and elegant, dignified timeworn buildings have inspired generations of scholars (including Bill Clinton in the 1970s!). Find your own inspiration in the sense of tradition and intellectual curiosity that pervades this lovely City your walking tour you'll see Christchurch College, where Harry Potter scenes were filmed and where Albert Einstein studied - bring your camera! You will also see the Bodleian library and the picture-perfect College courtyards for which Oxford is justifiably famous.

Steeped in history and heritage the area of England known as the Cotswolds is a charming blend of cottages with honey-coloured walls and thatched roofs, market towns with crooked half-timbered houses lining the High Street, and ancient stone crosses, all set in the gently rolling hills ('wolds') that are so typically English in character.

Warwick Castle (pronounced /ˈwɒrɪk/ war-ick (silent w in middle)listen (help·info)) is a medieval shell keep type castle in Warwick, the county town of Warwickshire, England. It is sited on a cliff overlooking a bend in the River Avon. It is traditionally associated with the earldom of Warwick, one of the oldest in England, although it was not in its possession between the early 17th and mid-18th centuries.

William Shakespeare

England's greatest poet and playwright was born at Stratford-upon-Avon, the son of a tradesman and Alderman of Stratford, John Shakespeare in 1564. William, the eldest son, and third child (of eight) was baptised on 26th April 1564 and probably educated at Stratford Grammar School, but little is known of his life up to his eighteenth year. He did not go to University and his younger contemporary and fellow-dramatist, Ben Johnson, would later speak disparagingly of his "small Latin, and less Greek" in the eulogy prefaced to the First Folio. However the Grammar School curriculum would have provided a formidable linguistic, and to some extent literary, education.

We then travel through the rolling Warwickshire hills to Stratford-upon-Avon, a market town at the edge of the Forest of Arden made famous for being the birthplace of the world-famous playwright William Shakespeare. We'll visit the Tudor-style birthplace of William Shakespeare, gaining a fascinating insight into his childhood with its typical parlour, bedrooms, kitchen, buttery and of course the glove-maker's workshop used by John, Shakespeare's father.

Then it's a short drive over to the medieval Warwick Castle, most of whose magnificent towers and ramparts are still intact. Warwick Castle will take you back through its 1,000 year history as you enter over the footbridge to a bygone world of banquets, battles and ceremony. Visit the Tussaud’s waxwork, or if you're feeling brave visit the spine-chilling dungeons where prisoners were tortured. You might wish to stroll through the Castle's delightful and lovingly tended gardens set in the peaceful surroundings of England's finest medieval Castle. During the summer months, archery, falconry and jousting take place. After Warwick Castle we head back through the Warwickshire countryside to London.
