St Paul’s Cathedral serves as the final resting place for numerous historic figures. Among them are the naval hero Horatio Nelson and the very architect, Christopher Wren. This grand building famously survived the relentless bombings of the Blitz during World War II. It also provided the majestic setting for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, a truly historic event.

A unique highlight of your visit is the opportunity to ascend the Dome Galleries. Begin with the famous Whispering Gallery, 257 steps from the Cathedral floor. Here, a whisper along the curving wall can be heard by someone positioned on the opposite side. For a greater challenge, continue to the Stone Gallery, 376 steps up, offering outdoor views. The ultimate ascent is to the Golden Gallery, 528 steps from the floor, providing spectacular panoramic vistas across London.

The Dome itself stands at an impressive 365 feet high, one for every day of the year. The entire building’s floor plan is shaped like a cross. An ongoing exhibition, “Sir Christopher Wren: The Quest for Knowledge,” explores Wren’s earlier life and less-known achievements in mathematics, astronomy, and physiology. Dedicated to Paul the Apostle, this hallowed site has hosted a Cathedral since 604 AD. The present magnificent structure was conceived and brought to life by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century, rising heroically after the devastating Great Fire of London.

For over 300 years, St Paul’s Cathedral has majestically dominated the London skyline. It has witnessed countless historic events, including the memorable wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The Cathedral also serves as the final resting place for numerous prominent historical figures. These include the naval hero Admiral Lord Nelson, and indeed, Sir Christopher Wren himself.

Step beneath the instantly recognisable Dome, which impressively stands at 365 feet – one for every day of the year. Notice how the floor plan of the entire building forms the shape of a cross. Simply marvel at this stunning feat of engineering and architectural brilliance. For an added experience, consider climbing the 257 steps from the Cathedral floor to the Whispering Gallery. This is the first of three Dome Galleries. A whisper along its curving wall can be heard clearly by anyone positioned along the opposite side! If 257 steps do not present enough of a challenge, continue climbing 376 steps to the Stone Gallery, and then 528 steps to reach the highest point, the Golden Gallery, offering breathtaking views of London.

The year 2023 marked the 300th anniversary of the passing of Sir Christopher Wren. He was a revolutionary scientist, mathematician, and the brilliant architect responsible for constructing the new St Paul’s Cathedral. A special exhibition explores Christopher Wren’s early life and extensive work. It also highlights his lesser-known achievements in mathematics, astronomy, and physiology. Visitors can uncover fascinating drawings, architectural designs, historical photographs, and personal artefacts from a unique period in history. This era saw the intriguing interlock of science and religion, profoundly transforming societal views.

Important Information for Your Visit

  • The Whispering Gallery is now accessible to visitors once more.
  • Photography is permitted in designated areas. However, filming, the use of flash, additional lighting, tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are not allowed.
  • Children under the age of 6 are granted free admission and do not require a ticket. Children must be accompanied by an adult when visiting the galleries.
  • All advance tickets are available for self-printing only. You will need access to a printer to produce your admission tickets.
  • Complimentary tickets are offered to visitors with a disability and their carers. These tickets should be requested upon arrival at the Cathedral.

  • Access to the Dome Galleries typically begins at 9:30 AM (10:00 AM on Wednesdays) and closes at 4:15 PM.
