From York see the Outstanding Beauty of the Yorkshire Dales
It’s time to step beyond the ancient walls of York and uncover the timeless beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Today’s journey leads you into a landscape shaped by wild beauty and pastoral charm, where rolling green hills, craggy moorlands, and wide romantic valleys stretch endlessly beneath open skies. As the city fades behind you, the pace of life slows, replaced by peaceful villages and scenery that feels wonderfully untouched.
Your first stop is the charming town of Pateley Bridge, nestled among hills and open moorland. This inviting place is perfect for a gentle wander, whether you choose to stroll past stone cottages, pop into a traditional pub, or visit the Oldest Sweet Shop in England. Trading since 1827, it offers a nostalgic taste of childhood favourites and timeless treats. From here, the journey continues to Grassington, a lively market town often called the beating heart of the Dales. Its cobbled square and historic buildings may look familiar, as it stands in for Darrowby in the much-loved series All Creatures Great and Small.
In the afternoon, you travel deeper into the Dales to Hawes, a welcoming market town best known as the home of Wensleydale Cheese. You can enjoy lunch here and choose whether to visit the famous creamery or simply explore the town’s quaint streets. Next, the soothing sound of rushing water greets you at Aysgarth Falls, a beautiful three-tiered waterfall admired for over two centuries and featured on film. Your final stop is the atmospheric ruins of Jervaulx Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery set in tranquil countryside, where history seems to whisper from the stone walls.
After a day filled with scenery, stories, and flavours, you return to York at approximately 5.30pm.
