Departing from London, you’ll head towards Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Often hailed as England’s national poet, Shakespeare embodies the spirit of the nation through his mastery of language and profound insight into human nature. As you travel, you’ll pass through the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, known for its stunning rolling chalk hills, historic villages, and rich biodiversity.

Afternoon: Stratford-upon-Avon & Ironbridge

In Stratford-upon-Avon, home to the Bard’s birthplace, schoolhouse, and resting place, you’ll have ample time to explore this charming market town and enjoy lunch at one of its many restaurants or riverside pubs. Besides snapping pictures of iconic timber-framed houses, you might want to visit Anne Hathaway’s House or the Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare and his wife are buried. Afterward, you’ll journey to the World Heritage site of Ironbridge, home to the world’s first-ever bridge made entirely of iron. Built during the Industrial Revolution, you can explore how it was pieced together or simply enjoy the views above the lazily flowing River Severn.

Early Evening: Journey to Shrewsbury & Free Evening

Finally, you’ll make your way to the county town of Shrewsbury, where the narrow streets of the town centre are almost completely encircled by the River Severn. Charles Darwin was born in this bustling market town, and its timber-framed black and white Tudor buildings will be your home for the next two nights.

Morning: Journey into Wales

Today, your tour takes you into the heart of North Wales! What makes Wales so captivating? Mid-Morning & Afternoon: Conwy & Eryri National Park

Your first stop of the day is Conwy, a gorgeous harbour town known for its imposing medieval castle perched right by the sea. It also boasts the ‘smallest house in Great Britain’ and a plethora of restaurants serving delectable fish and chips, perfect since Conwy is your lunch stop. We highly recommend splitting your time between exploring the sights and savouring the local flavours.

Recharged after lunch, we travel into Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). Here, you’ll roam impressive mountains and valleys, witness vast slate quarries, and travel through the dramatic Pass of Llanberis in the shadow of Snowdon, Wales’ highest peak. Next, we visit the charming village of Betws-y-Coed. Surrounded by rugged mountains and lush forests, it offers picturesque streets lined with traditional stone cottages. Make sure to walk to the ancient, weathered stone bridge called Pont-y-Pair, famous for its views of the cascading river. In the late afternoon, we’ll head over the English border and travel back to Shrewsbury.

Early Evening: Free Evening in Shrewsbury

It’s your second free evening in Shrewsbury, and you can decide how you want to spend it. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might try a ghost tour that explores the town’s haunted corners, delving into its eerie history. Alternatively, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the River Severn and find a traditional restaurant for your dinner.

Afternoon: Chatsworth House & Journey to York

In the early afternoon, you’ll reach the impressive Chatsworth House, the Duke of Devonshire’s renowned stately home and gardens. You’ll have several hours to explore here, and what you choose to do is entirely up to you. Perhaps you’ll immerse yourself in the beauty of the estate’s sprawling gardens, or maybe you can’t miss the magnificent collection of masterpieces inside, featuring artworks from the likes of Rembrandt, Reynolds, and Veronese. You’ll definitely want to refuel after taking it all in; there are plenty of places at the estate to stop for a treat, whether you need a quick bite or a full meal. Traveling northwards from Chatsworth, you’ll pass through some of the old industrial heartlands of northern England on your way to the historic walled city of York.

You’ll arrive in the historic city of York, a place where ancient history blends seamlessly with modern charm. As evening falls, the city truly comes alive with a magical atmosphere. You’ll stay here for two nights, giving you ample time to wander through the lit cobbled streets of The Shambles, visit one of the city’s cozy pubs, or take a leisurely walk along the medieval city walls.

Alternatively, you might opt for a delightful half-day excursion with your guide across the stunning Yorkshire Dales to the handsome market town of Knaresborough. Knaresborough’s spectacular stone viaduct over the River Nidd, winding streets, and picturesque houses perched on the cliffs create a scene straight out of a fairytale. Stroll through its charming market square, explore the ruins of its castle, and take in the stunning views. From Knaresborough, your excursion continues deeper into the Yorkshire Dales to another delightful village, Pateley Bridge.

Departing the historic city of York in the morning, your journey south to London begins. Be sure to visit Lincoln Cathedral while you’re here; once the world’s tallest building for around 200 years, its intricate design, towering spires, and stained-glass windows are truly awe-inspiring.

Afternoon: Cambridge Exploration & Journey to London

Next, you’ll travel to Cambridge, a city of timeless elegance and rich intellectual heritage. You can discover its prestigious university, visit one of the iconic college buildings, and explore popular museums, historic churches, or lively market squares. Perhaps take a guided punting ride along ‘the backs’ of the colleges or climb the steps of St Mary’s tower for a panoramic skyline view. There are also plenty of pubs, cafes, and tea rooms to choose from for lunch. After you’ve uncovered some of Cambridge’s secrets, you’ll begin your return journey to London.

Early Evening: Return to London

As you travel back to London, you can reflect on the incredible sights that make up the heart of England and showcase the spirit of Wales.
