History of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta
In 1979, few could have imagined that a small gathering of balloon enthusiasts would blossom into one of the largest balloon fiesta in the world. That first year saw only a handful of balloons, yet much excitement among Bristolians. There was a raw, experimental charm as pilots and organisers improvised their way through the fiestas. Today, the Bristol Balloon Fiesta attracts hundreds of balloons and more than half a million visitors annually.
During the 1980s and ’90s, the fiesta gathered momentum, drawing seasoned pilots and massive crowds. Bristol is home to pioneering balloon manufacturer Cameron Balloons so proved the perfect base for this growing spectacle. By the 2000s, pilots travelled from every corner of the world, bringing balloons in extraordinary shapes: giant animals, beloved cartoon characters, whimsical creations of every kind and many more. Sponsorships fuelled further growth, boosting safety, entertainment, and the festival’s scale.
Few sights rival the magic of the mass ascent, when over a hundred balloons rising in unison at dawn or dusk, drifting silently over the city in the soft light. Equally captivating is the Night Glow. As darkness falls, tethered balloons illuminate in time with music, creating a theatrical, dreamlike spectacle. Bristol’s place as the UK’s ballooning capital stretches back centuries. While the fiesta began in 1979, ballooning in the city dates to the 18th century.
The first recorded balloon in Bristol appeared indoors, at Cooper’s Hall on King Street in January 1784. Organiser Michael Biaggini charged spectators two shillings and sixpence to view the 30-foot balloon, with an extra fee to see it filled with inflammable air. Several exhibitions followed before the craze faded by 1786.
Nearly two centuries later, in the early 1960s, Glasgow-born aeronautical engineer Don Cameron moved to Bristol. Alongside fellow members of the Bristol Gliding Club, he built the Bristol Belle, the UK’s first modern hot air balloon. After initial setbacks, the balloon achieved its maiden flight from RAF Weston-on-the-Green on 9 July 1967.
The inaugural 1979 fiesta featured just 27 balloons. Now, it regularly sees up to 100 launch at once, with over 100,000 people attending on each of its four days and we much recommend a visit to this amazing spectacular.
