The Watercress Line runs between the historic market town of Alresford and the town of Alton, covering around ten miles of scenic Hampshire countryside. The line originally formed part of the London and South Western Railway and first opened in 1865. It became famous for transporting fresh watercress grown in the River Itchen valley to markets in London, giving the railway the nickname that remains today. After closure in the 1970s, a dedicated group of railway enthusiasts began the enormous task of restoring the line. Today the Watercress Line is one of Britain’s most successful heritage railways, operated largely by volunteers who maintain the locomotives, stations and historic rolling stock. The Route: Four Historic Stations
A trip on the Watercress Line is a twenty-mile round journey through the Hampshire countryside, stopping at four charming heritage stations. Alresford is the beautifully restored western terminus of the line and the heart of the railway. Visitors will find a traditional booking office, café and railway shop, all set within a picturesque Georgian town. Ropley station is home to the railway’s engineering works and locomotive sheds and is one of the best places to see steam engines being maintained and prepared for service. Medstead and Four Marks station sits more than six hundred feet above sea level, making it one of the highest stations in southern England, with a quiet rural setting that reflects the character of traditional country rail travel. At the eastern end of the line lies Alton, where the heritage railway connects with the modern national rail network.

Experiences during the visit include heritage train journeys hauled by Flying Scotsman, static displays and footplate viewing opportunities, and premium breakfast or afternoon tea experiences in historic carriages. Flying Scotsman is one of the most famous steam locomotives in the world. Built in 1923, it became internationally celebrated as the first locomotive officially recorded reaching one hundred miles per hour. Whenever it tours heritage railways across the UK, tickets sell quickly and enthusiasts travel long distances for the chance to see it in action.
