Famous Harry Potter Cloisters at Lacock Abbey
The first Harry Potter film, The Sorcerer’s Stone, features Durham Cathedral. Harry, Ron, and Hermione stroll through Hogwarts’ halls between classes, but they were actually Durham Cathedral’s beautiful cloisters, built in the 11th and early 12th centuries to contain Saint Cuthbert and Bede’s bones. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets used a Durham Cathedral set to show Harry freeing Dobby the house elf with a sock. The first two films depicted Professor McGonagall’s office as a cathedral chapter house.
Oxford University’s Bodleian Libraries famous worldwide. The Bodleian Old Library’s harsh architecture makes it a good contender for the Restricted Section of the Hogwarts Library. The first two Harry Potter films used Alnwick Castle in Northumberland to depict Hogwarts Castle’s façade. The outer bailey is where Harry learnt to fly, and the inner bailey is where he and Ron crashed the Weasley flying automobile. Alnwick is the second-largest inhabited castle in the U.K. and over 950 years old.
Harry Potter has soul-sucking demons, shrieking mandrakes, and time-travel equipment, but is the train ride from King’s Cross Station to their school more magical? Real-life Hogwarts Express is West Coast Railways’ Jacobite steam train. Explore its haunted cloisters that become Hogwarts corridors. Visit Professor Quirrell’s potion-making classroom and Professor Snape’s Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. Lacock is a famous films location for film and TV dramas, such as Pride and Prejudice (1995) and Cranford (2007) were filmed in the village. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald also included it briefly. The fantasy adventure Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box was filmed there in spring 2012.
Lord Grantham, his family, and some staff featured in a 2015 Downton Abbey episode set in a 1920s livestock market in Lacock. Soon later, the village appeared in two Wolf Hall episodes based on Hilary Mantel’s novels. After filming Beauty and the Beast in 2017, Downton Abbey was filmed here in late 2018, including a royal parade. The film was released in September 2019.
British band Hot Chocolate’s 1971 hit I Believe (In Love) music video was filmed in the area.

Directions from Victoria Station to Bulleid Way: Exit Victoria Station via the Buckingham Palace Road Entrance, to the right of the Gatwick Express platforms. Turn left and walk down Buckingham Palace Road until you reach the first main junction. When it’s safe to do so, cross the road at the traffic lights and turn left. Walk around 20 yards, before turning right into Bulleid Way. Your coach will NOT depart from Victoria Coach Station.
