During World War I, Paris was bombarded, and during World War II, it was occupied by the Germans from 1940 to 1944. Paris was the epicentre of contemporary art and a draw for writers, painters, and thinkers from all over the world between the two wars. The population fell for the remainder of the century after hitting a record-breaking high of 2.1 million in 1921. Along with the opening of the Louvre’s glass pyramid, new museums were established, including the Centre Pompidou, Musée Marmottan Monet, and Musée d’Orsay.Human remains and proof of a hunter-gatherer camp from the Mesolithic era, around 8000 BC, are the earliest indications of human habitation in Paris.[1]
A sub-tribe of the Celtic Senones, the Parisii established on the banks of the Seine between 250 and 225 BC. They issued coins, constructed bridges and a fort, and started trading with other European river communities.[2]
Titus Labienus led a Roman army that overcame the Parisii in 52 BC and founded the Gallo-Roman garrison town of Lutetia.[3] Following its Christianization in the third century AD, the town became the capital of Clovis I, King of the Franks, in 508, following the fall of the Roman Empire.
