Enchanting lake front Italian towns on Lake Garda, Italy

Lago di Garda

Known in Italian as Lago di Garda, this spectacular lake is one of Italy’s most favoured holiday destinations with every town and village around the lake has its own charm, offering a different experience depending on where you choose to stay.

At its widest point in the south, Lake Garda is bordered by the towns of Peschiera del Garda, Sirmione, and Desenzano del Garda. The landscape here is mostly flat, with vineyards, historic sites, and easy access to the motorway running from Milan through Verona to Venice. Peschiera and Desenzano are also the only lakeside resorts served by Italy’s rail network.

Sirmione is often called the jewel of the southern shore. Visitors flock to its charming peninsula town centre, stroll to the Roman villa ruins, and stop at its famous thermal baths. The villa’s remains not only offer a glimpse into the past but also provide sweeping views over the lake.

On the eastern shore, Bardolino and Garda are among the lake’s most scenic towns. Whether you’re camping beside olive groves or staying in a luxury villa, the setting is idyllic. Bardolino is particularly famous for its wine festival in late summer, and the hills behind both towns are dotted with vineyards and olive oil producers.

This side of the lake falls within the Veneto region, while the northernmost shores belong to Trentino-Alto Adige. As the lake narrows further north, the terrain becomes hillier and the mountains press closer to the water. Historic Torri del Benaco and Malcesine, both crowned with medieval castles, are popular stops. Malcesine also boasts a cable car to Monte Baldo, offering panoramic views and hiking trails.

The northern end is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. Torbole is a hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing, thanks to its reliable daily breezes. Just inland, Arco attracts climbers from around the world to its famous rock faces. A little further west lies Riva del Garda, a larger and more relaxed town with a historic centre and an engaging museum. Across the lake, Limone sul Garda enchants day-trippers with its lemon groves, winding alleys, and timeless charm.
