Here at Best Value Tours, we are delighted that US Vice President JD Vance is currently holidaying in the UK and taking in some sightseeing. Arriving last Saturday Vance spent the weekend at Chevening House (official residence of the foreign secretary) in beautiful ‘Garden of England’, Kent, before travelling yesterday to the stunning Cotswolds for a weeks holiday and before flying home there is a planned visit to amazing Hampton Court. Hampton Court Palace – A Royal Legacy
Hampton Court Palace began life in 1515 as the lavish private residence of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, one of the most powerful men in England. However, by 1529 Wolsey had fallen from favour, and the palace passed into the hands of King Henry VIII. Henry quickly made Hampton Court one of his most treasured residences. It was expanded to house his court and his future queen, Anne Boleyn, with new apartments built above what is now Anne Boleyn’s Gate.
Over the years, Hampton Court was the stage for some of the most dramatic moments of Henry’s life: the break with Rome, the birth of his heir Edward VI and the death of Jane Seymour, the annulment of his marriage to Anne of Cleves, and the scandal and arrest of Catherine Howard. In 1689, King William III and Queen Mary II embarked on an ambitious rebuilding project with architect Sir Christopher Wren, aiming to rival France’s Palace of Versailles. Large parts of the Tudor palace were demolished to make way for elegant Baroque wings. King George II was the last reigning monarch to live at Hampton Court, but the palace remained a symbol of royal grandeur.
The Great Hall was restored in 1796, and in 1838 Queen Victoria ordered a full restoration before opening the palace to the public. On 2 September 1952, it was granted Grade I listed status, with many other structures in the grounds also protected. Today, Hampton Court draws visitors from across the globe. Guests can explore Henry VIII’s Kitchens, admire the vast Great Hall, view masterpieces from the Royal Collection, and wander through the formal gardens. The grounds feature the world’s oldest surviving hedge maze, and are maintained by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces.

Lunch is calling, and there’s no better way to sate your appetite than with a delicious two-course meal at the Swan Hotel, which is located in the heart of Bibury and has a view of the River Coln.
