The city’s industrial growth started in the 19th century, and in the early 20th century it had a boom thanks to the large printing and automobile manufacturing businesses. In the 1970s and 1980s, these and other British heavy industries disappeared, leaving behind a metropolis that had grown much beyond the university town of the past.
