5 Day – Edinburgh for New Year Hogmanay

5th November 2024

Here at Best Value Tours, we are delighted to recommend great festive period tours and today we feature; 5 Day – Edinburgh for New Year Hogmanay | Best Value Tours

Hogmanay is the Scots name for the last day of the old year and describes Scottish New Year celebrations. Another celebration usually follows on New Year’s Day (1 January) morning and, in certain situations, 2 January, a Scottish bank holiday. Hogmanay is sometimes loosely used to refer to the entire period between the last few days of the previous year and the first few days of the new year. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay doesn’t always happen on December 31.

Hogmanay may have originated from Norse and Gaelic winter solstice celebrations. Gift-giving and visiting friends and neighbours are common customs in Scotland, with special attention to the first-foot, the first guest of the new year.

Customs

Hogmanay has several national and local traditions. First-footing, which begins after midnight, is the most common national custom. Being the first to enter a friend or neighbour’s home and presenting symbolic gifts such salt (less common today), coal, shortbread, whisky, and black bun (a rich fruit dessert) are meant to bring luck. After that, guests receive food and drink as gifts. This may happen all morning and into the next day (although people now visit residences far into January). The first-foot is considered to bring luck for the year. First-foot males are usually tall, dark-haired.

Local customs

Hogmanay Street Party Catalan Sun Goddess, Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, in northeast Scotland, has a Hogmanay fireball swinging tradition. Locals make “balls” of chicken wire loaded with old newspaper, sticks, rags, and other dry combustible debris up to 2 feet (0.61 m) in diameter and attach them to 3 feet (0.91 m) of wire, chain, or non-flammable rope. The balls are lit when the Old Town House bell rings to celebrate the new year, and the swingers walk up High Street from the Mercat Cross to the Cannon and back, swinging the burning balls around their heads.

After the ritual, burning fireballs are flung into the harbour. In 2007/2008, 12,000 people saw this display, which is popular.[38] Recently, fire poi, a pipe band, street drumming, and a firework display after the last fireball is hurled into the water have been added to entertain crowds waiting for midnight. Online livestreaming of the festivities.[37] Burning the clavie in Burghead, Moray, is another fire event.[39]

First-footers in Dundee and east coast fishing towns carried adorned herrings. As darkness neared, Falkland men marched in torchlight to the Lomond Hills. St Andrews bakers gave local children Hogmanay (“Cake Day”) cakes.

Institutions had traditions too. Scottish regiment officers served lavish feasts and piped the Old Year out the barrack gates at bells. “Who goes there?” the sentry asks the new escort outside the gates. Answer: “The New Year, all’s well.”

The Highlands traditionally sain (Scots for ‘protecting, blessing’) the household and livestock on Hogmanay. Households sip and sprinkle’ magic water’ from ‘a dead and living ford’ around the house on New Year’s morning. After spraying water in every room, on beds, and on everyone, the house is sealed and juniper branches are burned and carried throughout the home and byre. The buildings are fumigated with juniper smoke till residents sneeze and cough. Next, all doors and windows are opened to let in the chilly, fresh new year air. The mother gives ‘a restorative’ from the whisky bottle, and the family eats New Year’s breakfast.

“Auld Lang Syne”

In 1841, John Masey Wright and John Rogers illustrated Auld Lang Syne.

Many countries now sing “Auld Lang Syne” at Hogmanay. Based on traditional and other sources, Robert Burns wrote “Auld Lang Syne” in Scots. This song is often sung in a circle of linked arms around midnight on New Year’s Day. Participants should only link arms at the start of the final stanza before running towards the centre.
