Full details below, but first some brief history of the famous Scottish North Coast 500.

The 516-mile (830 km) beautiful North Coast 500 starts and ends at Inverness Castle on Scotland’s north coast. The NC500, created in 2015, links various north Highlands landmarks in one touring route. Some parts of northern Scotland have benefited economically from increased tourism due to the route. Traffic has increased risky driving, road damage, and environmental problems.

Route

Lochinver-Durness A894 Kylesku Bridge spanning Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin. Traditional counties Inverness-shire, Ross and Cromarty, Sutherland, and Caithness are on the path.

The clockwise route begins in Inverness and passes Muir of Ord, Applecross (including the Bealach na Bà), Gairloch, Ullapool, Scourie, Durness, Castle of Mey, Thurso, John o’ Groats, Wick, Dunrobin Castle, Dingwall, and Muir of Ord again. Many parts of Scotland’s North Highland Way are part of the North Coast 500.

History

The North Highland Initiative (NHI) Tourism Project Board developed the North Coast 500 in March 2015 to collaborate with all areas of the tourism sector to deliver unifying benefits to companies along the route. In the North Highlands, a tourism product that comprised Caithness, Sutherland, and Ross-shire was needed, and the North Coast 500 would fill that need. Visit Scotland and HIE supported the project.

Now Travel Magazine ranked it sixth in their “Top 5 Coastal Routes in the World” in 2015. Some call it “Scotland’s Route 66”

Endurance riders also face the North Coast 500.Mark Beaumont set the 516-mile record in 37 hours and 58 minutes in August 2015. Beaumont recovered the record in September 2022, finishing in 28 hours and 35 minutes after others improved.

Luke Ivory set the North Coast 500 record in July 2021 with 5 days 23 hours 4 minutes and 17 seconds. In April 2019, William Sichel finished the North Coast 500 in 8 days 19 hours 7 minutes and 7 seconds, the first successful attempt.
