St. Martin’s Cathedral crowned eleven Hungarian monarchs and eight queens from 1563 until 1783. Ancient Roman military camp Gerulata was established in Bratislava in the 2nd century A.D.
Rome ruled the area from the 1st to 4th centuries A.D. and included it in the Danubian Limes border defensive system. The Romans introduced grape planting and winemaking, which continues today.
Eastern Slavs arrived in the 5th and 6th century during the Migration Period.[23] In response to Avar attacks, neighbouring Slavic tribes rebelled and founded Samo’s Empire (623–658), the first Slavic state. Castles at Bratislava (Brezalauspurk) and Devín (Dowina) were significant Slavic centres in the 9th century, serving the Principality of Nitra and Great Moravia. Due to linguistic reasons and a lack of archaeological data, scholars have contested the two Great Moravian castles’ fortress status.
In the 10th century, Pressburg (after Pozsony county) became part of Hungary (the “Kingdom of Hungary” from 1000). It became a major economic and administrative hub on the kingdom’s border.[30] During his fifth expedition against Hungary in 1052, German Emperor Henry III besieged Pressburg without success after the Hungarians wrecked his Danube supply ships. This strategic location made the city a frequent battleground but also gave it economic growth and political significance. King Sigismund declared it a free royal town in 1405 after Hungarian King Andrew III given it its first “town privileges” in 1291. He granted the town its own arms in 1436.
Hungary lost the Battle of Mohács to the Ottoman Empire in 1526. Ottomans besieged and devastated Pressburg but failed to take it. The city became the capital of Hungary in 1536 after joining the Habsburg monarchy and marked a new era due to Ottoman inroads into Hungary. Kings, archbishops (1543), aristocracy, and all key organisations and posts were coronated in the city. St. Martin’s Cathedral crowned eleven Hungarian monarchs and queens between 1536 and 1830.
