9th November 2024
Here at Best Value Tours, we are delighted to recommend great Scotland tours and today we feature new to 5 Day Iona, Mull and the Isle of Skye | Best Value Tours
Full details below, but first some brief history of Wonderful Isle of Iona.
Iron Age, the Hebrides have been inhabited by multiple languages, hence many island names have multiple meanings. Few islands have as many names as “Iona” over the years.
Lack of archaeological evidence for yew on the island leads Coates (2006) to reject the “yew” explanation. Instead, Coates parallels Punic ‘y (“island, isolated place”).
Geography
Map of 1874, subdivisions: *Ceann Tsear *Sliabh Meanach *Machar *Sliginach *Sliabh Siar *Staonaig. Iona is 2 km (1 km) from Mull’s coast. It has 125 residents and is 2 km (1 mi) wide and 6 km (4 mi) long. Few trees, mostly near the parish church, like other ocean-breezed areas.
Dùn Ì, an Iron Age hill fort from 100 BC to A.D. 200, is Iona’s highest point at 101 m (331 ft). The Bay at the Back of the Ocean and Càrn Cùl ri Éirinn (the Hill/Cairn of [turning the] Back to Ireland), near where St. Columba arrived, are on Iona.
Baile Mòr, dubbed “The Village” locally, is the principal settlement on the eastern side of the island, located at St. Ronan’s Bay. The primary school, post office, island’s two hotels, Bishop’s House, and Nunnery ruins are here. The Abbey and MacLeod Centre are a short walk north. Iona Beach Party is held on west-side Port Bàn (white port) beach.
The main offshore islets and skerries are Eilean Annraidh (island of storms) and Eilean Chalbha (calf island) to the north, Rèidh Eilean and Stac MhicMhurchaidh to the west, and Eilean Mùsimul and Soa Island to the south. The 11-person crew of the salt-carrying steamship Cathcart Park escaped in two boats after it grounded on Soa on April 15, 1912.

Description
Living on an island was challenging. The ocean controlled you, limited you to local hunts, and may invade you at any time. However, we believe these trials create the most beautiful civilisations and landscapes.
The east Atlantic winds sculpted beautiful winged cliffs in Skye. The sea and skies around Mull are full of whales and eagles. Celtic, Viking, and Christian invasions shaped Iona’s extraordinary culture. Explore Scotland’s rugged, picturesque, and historic islands on this tour.
