The Alhambra Palace is located in Granada, Spain, is a remarkable palace and fortress complex. Celebrated as one of the finest achievements of its magnificent architecture, it stands today as one of the most iconic and best-preserved palatial sites of the historic world.
The Napoleonic occupation marked a dark chapter in the history of the Alhambra. In 1812, as the French army withdrew, part of the monument was demolished, and its near-total destruction was narrowly averted thanks to the bravery of a Spanish soldier.
In the years that followed, recognition of the Alhambra’s significance grew. Another Trust was established in 1944 and remained in place until responsibility for the monument’s cultural functions and services was ultimately transferred to the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.
