It was planned by Edmund Beckett Denison and Astronomer Royal George Airy, and built by Edward John and Frederick Dent. Its reliability can be changed by adding or subtracting pre-decimal pennies from the pendulum. Whitechapel Bell Foundry cast the 13.5-ton Great Bell. Its namesake may come from Sir Benjamin Hall, who installed it, or heavyweight boxing champion Benjamin Caunt. Four quarter bells sound on quarter hours.

History of Tower
The Elizabeth Tower, sometimes known as “Big Ben”, was built as part of Charles Barry’s design for a new Palace of Westminster after the old palace was destroyed by fire on October 16, 1834. Barry was the main architect of the neo-gothic palace, although he hired Augustus Pugin to create the Clock Tower, which recalls Pugin’s Scarisbrick Hall design. Construction began on the tower on September 28, 1843. Building contractors Thomas Grissell and Morton Peto. Emily, sister of Peto’s daughter-in-law, laid the first stone, according to a Parliamentary Archives trowel. At Barry’s last visit to collect the drawings, Pugin wrote: “I never worked so hard in my life for Mr Barry for tomorrow I render all my designs for finishing his bell tower and it is beautiful”. It was his last design before his mental illness and death in 1852.[16]
