Full details below, but first some brief history of the London Cable Car

The London cable car, also called the Dangleway , and, for sponsorship purposes, the IFS Cloud Cable Car , is a cable car link that spans the River Thames in London, England. The line, which came at a total cost of about £60 million. Transport for London (TfL) is the operator of the service, which began operations on June 28, 2012. Prior to this, the airline Emirates sponsored the line from its inception as the Emirates Air Line until June 28, 2022. Since October 20, 2022, it has been sponsored by the technology company IFS

From the Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Victoria Dock, west of ExCeL London, the service consists of a 0.62-mile (1.00 km) gondola line that crosses the Thames. The service promotes “a unique view of London” in addition to providing transport across the river. FirstGroup assumed management of the cable car route on June 28, 2024.

History of the Meridian Skyway Proposal
When the “car free” transit plan for the Millennium Dome (now The O2) was being developed in the late 1990s, the concept for a cable car connecting the Greenwich Peninsula with the north bank of the Thames originally surfaced. This link, which was proposed to planning authorities by Meridian Cable Cars in early 1997, would have connected the Dome site to Tower Hamlets’ DLR East India station.

The cable car, which had 23 gondolas with seats for nine people and standing space for an additional six, was projected to have cost between £8 and £10 million. It would have flown at 5 mph (8.0 km/h) at a height of 50 to 80 meters (160 to 260 feet). With a one-way transit time of three minutes, it could have accommodated 2,500 passengers each hour. The northern and southern sides received full planning clearance in July 1998 and December 1997, respectively; the northern side permission was one of the London Docklands Development Corporation’s final actions. The cable car project was supposed to start in October 1999 , but due to the Dome project administrators’ unfavourable responses, investors withdrew, and the project fell apart in October 1998.
