Full details below, but first some brief history of the Stunning Lake District National Park.

Lakeland, often known as the Lake District, is a mountainous national park in Cumbria, North West England. It is known for its lakes, seashore, Cumbrian highlands, Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin, and Lake Poets-related literature. England’s highest mountains are Scafell Pike (978 m), Helvellyn (950 m), and Skiddaw in Cumbria. The region has 16 large lakes. They include Windermere, England’s longest and largest lake at 11 miles (18 km) and 5.69 square miles (14.73 km2), and Wast Water, the deepest at 79 meters (259 ft).[6][7]

The Lake District National Park, founded in 1951, encompasses 2,362 km2 (912 square miles), most of the region. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 2017.

National Park

The middle Lake District is in the Lake District National Park, but Kendal, several coastal areas, and the Cartmel and Furness peninsulas are not. The region became a national park on 9 May 1951, a month after the Peak District, the first UK national park. It remained its original limits until 2016, when it was enlarged by 3% east into the Yorkshire Dales National Park to include high-value Lune Valley territory. The national park had 18.14 million visitors in 2022. This amounts to 29.15 million tourist days, including trips over three hours. It is the largest of England and Wales’ thirteen national parks and the UK’s second largest after Cairngorms.

It restricts undesirable industrial or commercial change to protect the landscape. The cultural landscape of the national park, excluding the 2016 addition, was recognised a World Heritage Site in 2017. After two 1980s and one 2012 failed attempts to list the park, this was the fourth. From Kendal, the Lake District National Park Authority manages the park. It operates Brockhole, a Windermere visitor attraction in a historic country house, Coniston Boating attraction, and information centres. The park authority comprises 20 members: six from Westmorland and Furness Council, four from Cumberland Council, and 10 from the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs.
