Full details below, but first some brief history of charming Sligo, Ireland.
The number of prehistoric sites near and within Sligo shows its prominence. The first roundabout in Sligo was built around a megalithic passage tomb at Abbeyquarter North in Garavogue Villas. Located on the western outskirts of Carrowmore on the Cúil Iorra Peninsula, this monument stands out among the many in the area. The only place in Ireland with all kinds of megalithic monuments is near Sligo town, which has one of the highest concentrations of prehistoric archaeological sites. The giant Miosgan Maeve cairn atop Knocknarea mountain dominates the skyline west of town. Two enormous stone cairns are on Cairns Hill south of town.
The NRA found an early Neolithic causewayed enclosure during 2002 N4 Sligo Inner Relief Road excavations. The Magheraboy causewayed enclosure rises above the town from the south and dates to 4000 B.C. The earliest causewayed enclosure in Britain or Ireland is this. The huge space encircled by a segmented ditch and fence may have been a commercial and religious site. These monuments commemorate Ireland’s first farmers and agriculture. Edward Danagher, who discovered Magheraboy, said “Magheraboy indicates a stable and successful population during the final centuries of the fifth millennium and the first centuries of the fourth millennium BC”. Danagher found a Bronze Age Henge in Tonafortes (near the Carraroe roundabout) on Sligo’s southern edge.
Some believe Sligo Bay was Claudius Ptolemy’s second-century A.D. co-ordinate map’s Nagnata, a natural harbour known to Greek, Phoenician, and Roman traders.[10] The large monastery constructed by Columcille 5 miles north at Drumcliff eclipsed Sligo in the early mediaeval period. The current town site had a bridge and small village in the 12th century.
Sligo Castle, built in 1245 by Norman knight Maurice Fitzgerald, the Justiciar of Ireland, is credited with creating the mediaeval European-style town and harbour. According to the annalists, the town was a sraidbhaile (‘street settlement’) with the castle and a defensive bawn near Quay street. Maurice Fitzgerald and Connacht King Felim mac Cathal Crobderg Ua Conchobair built Blackfriars Dominican Friary in 1253. This was unintentionally burned down in 1414 and restored by Tighernan O’Rourke. Norman hegemony in Sligo was short-lived. The battle of Credran Cille in 1257 at Ros Ceite (Rosses Point) between Godfrey O’Donnell, Lord of Tirconnell, and Maurice Fitzgerald stopped the Norman progress in Sligo. A single fighting wound killed both commanders. After this, the Norman invasion of Tír Chonaill was cancelled. A survey from 1289 shows 180 burgesses. Normans built a lasting foundation.
The town is the only Norman-founded Irish town under practically continuous local Irish rule during the Middle Ages. By 1315 AD, it was the administrative capital of the O’Conor Sligo (O’Conchobar Sligigh) confederation of Iochtar Connacht (Lower Connacht), despite Anglo-Norman attempts to reclaim it O’Conors were a branch of the O’Conchobar Kings of Connacht, also known as Clan Aindrias. It grew in the Irish area of Cairbre Drom Cliabh, becoming the centre of the confederation of túatha. Irish túatha such as Tír Fhíacrach Múaidhe, Luighne Connacht, Tir Olliol, and Corann were also discussed. In this period, Sligo was governed by the Gaelic system of an elected Rí túath (territory king/lord) and an oireacht parliament under Fénechus (Brehon) law.
