Full details below, but first some brief information about the famous Trafalgar Square Christmas tree and lights, the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree has been gifted annually by Oslo to Londoners since 1947. From early December to January 6, Trafalgar Square displays the tree conspicuously. Norwegian resistance fighter Mons Urangsvåg cut down the first Trafalgar Square Christmas tree in 1942 during a raid on Hisøy, an island off the west coast of Norway between Bergen and Haugesund, as a way to thank Britain for their support during the Second World War. Haakon VII, the Norwegian monarch in exile, received the tree after it was transferred to England. Now a tree grows from the stump.

The Trafalgar Square traditional carol-singing program uses the tree as a focal point to raise funds for several charitable organisations. The Christmas tree is removed before the 12th Night of Christmas for recycling. The tree is chipped and decomposed to create mulch.

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is usually a 50-60-year-old Norway spruce, standing over 20 meters tall. In Norway, the tree is cut in November during a ceremony attended by the British Ambassador, Mayor of Oslo, and Lord Mayor of Westminster. The cut tree is transported to the UK via boat across the sea A Fred Olsen Line cargo ship once transported it to Felixstowe for gratis. According to, DFDS Tor Line transported the tree from the North Sea to Birmingham in 2007.Since 2018, Radius Group has been responsible for transporting, guarding, and erecting the tree in Trafalgar Square.
