Here at Best Value Tours, we are delighted to recommend great Scotland tours and today we feature new to Best Value Tours; 6 Day – Outer Hebrides and Skye Adventure

Full details below, but first some brief history of the Outer Hebrides.

The Outer Hebrides also known as the Western Isles; The Minch, Little Minch, and Sea of the Hebrides separate the islands from the Scottish mainland and the Inner Hebrides. Gaelic’s heartland is the Outer Hebrides. One of Scotland’s 32 council areas, the islands have used the Gaelic name since 1998, even in English. The council region is Na h-Eileanan an Iar (‘the Western Isles’) and its council is Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

The climate is mild and oceanic, and most islands have metamorphic bedrock. The 15 inhabited islands had 26,120 people in 2022, while there are around 50 large uninhabited islands. Barra Head and the Butt of Lewis are 210 km apart.

Many interesting prehistoric constructions predate Roman and Greek writings about the islands. The Western Isles were part of the Norse realm of the Suðreyjar for 400 years until the Treaty of Perth in 1266 gave Scotland autonomy over the Outer Hebrides. Clan chiefs like the MacLeods, MacDonalds, Mackenzies, and MacNeils ruled the islands. The Highland Clearances of the 19th century devastated numerous towns, and population declines have only just stopped. Many areas are now under local authority, and tourism, crofting, fishing, and weaving are the main industries.

Ferries connect the Outer Hebrides to mainland Scotland, which is essential for residents and workers. Stormy seas in the region have claimed numerous ships, but modern navigation systems reduce the risks. Local culture includes Gaelic, religion, music, and sport, and there are many conservation sites to conserve the environment.
